Preas Raiteas: Sábháil ár Oifig an Phoist

Sábháíl Oifig an Phoist Bhéal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh/

Save Ballingeary Post Office

Preas Ráiteas: LE h-ÉISIÚINT LAITHREACH

Buille trom do phobal Bhéal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh cinneadh An Post an Oifig a’ Phoist sa bhaile a dhúnadh agus tá feachtas agóide ar bun chun iachaill a chur ar eagras Stat an cinneadh seo a chur arc heal.

Ag cruinniú poiblí aréir (oíche Dé Luain)  i mBéal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh bhí slua mór i láthair chun freasúra an phobail do mholadh An Post ‘áisíneacht’ a chur in áit an Oifig an Phoist nuair a dhúnfaidh sé ag deireadh na bliana.

Dúradh ag an gcruinniú go raibh An Post ag tapú na deise an Oifig an Phoist a dhúnadh ar eirí as don Maistir Phoist, Aodán Ó Tuama.  Tugadh le fios go raibh an ghnó á dhéanamh ag Oifig an Phoist agus gur ar éigean go bhféadfaí a rá gur ar bhonn easpa gnó a bhí an Oifig an Phoist á dhúnadh.

Tháinig an chinneadh aniar aduaidh ar phobal na h-áite mar nár fhogair An Post go raibh siad ag tairiscint ‘aisíneacht’ ach le seachtain anuas agus nach bhfuil ach go dtí an Aoine, 17 Nollag, ar dhaoine ar mhaith leo an rogha sin iarratas a chur isteach go dtí An Post.

Tuigtear gur beag spéise a bheidh ag muintir na h-áite san aisíneacht agus gur mó an seans nach mbeidh aon laithreacht ag An Post i mBéal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh laistigh de chúpla seachtain.

Tá buairt ar leith ann mar gheall ar ghnóanna áitiúla.  An mairfidh siad gan seirbhís poist?  Nach deacra i bhfad a bheidh sé gnóanna nua a mhealladh chuig an ceantar?

Tá deacracht ar leith ag Coláiste na Mumhan, an Coláiste Samhraidh is sine sa tír, mar go mbionn daltaí an Choláiste sin ag baint úsáide as Oifig an Phoist mar bhanc.   Gan an seirbhís sin, beidh siad thíos go mór agus cuirfear le deacrachtaí an Choláiste.

Tá pobal Bhéal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh ag éileamh ar An Post athmhachnamh a dhéanamh ar an gcinneadh seo agus Oifig an Phoist Bhéal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh a choimead ar oscailt.  Tá cuireadh ag dul do pholaiteoirí freastal ar chruinniú phoiblí Dé Luain seo chugainn, 20 Nollaig, ag 7in.

Save Ballingeary Post Office

Press Release:  IMMEDIATE RELEASE

An Post’s decision to close Ballingeary Post Office is a heavy blow but the local community is determined to fight the proposal.   A campaign to force An Post to reverse the closure and to keep Ballingeary Post Office open is set to intensify in the coming days.

At a public meeting on Monday night, a large crowd  gathered to express  opposition to the proposal to replace the Post Office with an ‘agency’ with the limited services that entails.

It was said at the meeting that An Post were availing of the retirement of the local postmaster to close the post office.   The Post Office has a significant volume of business throughout the year and there’s no ground to suggest that lack of commercial viability is a reason to close the Post Office.

The decision to close the Post Office came as a surprise to the local community as did the haste with which An Post rushed to advertise the agency without consulting with the local community about their requirements.

It’s understood that there’s very little interest among locals in the ‘agency’ option and it’s possible that there would be no An Post presence in Ballingeary as a result of An Post’s decision.

This is a significant cause of concern for local businesses whose costs will be increased significantly as a result of the proposed new arrangement.

The local Irish Summer College, Coláiste na Mumhan, the first such College in the state, has a particular difficulty.  In the past years, it has recommended to prospective students to open a Post Office account which means they can use the local post office in Ballingeary as a bank during their Summer courses.

The community of Ballingeary is united in demanding a reversal of An Post’s foolish and shortsighted decision.  They want to keep Ballingeary Post Office open.

A public meeting is to be held on Monday next, 20 December, at 7pm in Scoil Mhuire, the local secondary school.  It’s intended to invite local politicians to attend to hear the concerns of locals.
