Bhí agóid ar siúl inniu (Dé Máirt, 14 Nollaig) ag Oifig an Phoist i mBéal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh chun cur i gcoinne cinneadh An Post an oifig a dhúnadh go luath.

There was a protest today (Tuesday, 14 December, 1pm) at Ballingeary Post Office to express community opposition to An Post’s plan to shut down the post office.

A chara,

Is mór an chúis díomá agus mishástachta dom féin agus do phobal an cheantair ar fad cinneadh An Post deireadh a chur le hOifig an Phoist Bhéal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh nuair a eireoidh an Maistir Post as a chúram go luath.  Céim mór ar chúl a bheadh i gceist le h-áisíneacht a bhunú ina ionad. Bainim féin agus an pobal ar fad úsáid rialta/laethúil as an Oifig a’ Phoist – ag seoladh litreacha agus birt ann, ag bailiú íocaíochtaí leasa shoisialach, ag íoc ár gcuid billí agus ag baint úsáide as an seirbhís baincéireachta.   Tá sé soiléir don phobal go bhfuil gnó maith á dhéanamh ann agus nach bhfuil aon bunús gnó leis an gcinneadh ísliú céime a thabhairt don cheantar tré’n oifig a dhúnadh.

Dá ndúnfaí Oifig an Phoist, pé rud a thiocfadh ina áit, buille mór a bheadh ann do spiorad agus d’íomhá an cheantair trath go bhfuil cúrsaí eacnamaíochta go h-olc ar fuaid na tire.   Baineann gnóanna an cheantair úsáid as Oifig an Phoist agus is cuid riachtanach é dá saol oibre .  Chuirfeadh dúnadh na h-Oifige isteach go mór orthu san agus is cinnte go n-imeodh sé i gcoinnibh iarrachtaí atá á dhéanamh gnóanna eile a mhealladh chuig an cheantair.

Bionn méadú mór ar ghnó Oifig an Phoist anseo le linn an tSamhraidh nuair a bhionn na céadta páistí ag teacht anseo ó gach cuid den tír chun freastal ar Choláíste na Mumhan.   Baineann siad go léir úsáid as an Oifig an Phoist mar an bhanc agus ba mhór an bhuille dóibh é dá mbeadh laghdú ar na seirbhísí sin dá ndúnfaí Oifig an Phoist mar atá molta agaibh.

Creidim go laidir gur buille eile é seo ag na h-údaráis ar an gceantar seo, ceantar Gaeltachta, agus ar cheantair tuaithe na tire trí cheile agus mura gcuirimíd stop leis go mbeidh a thuilleadh buillí ina dhiaidh.   Iarraim ar An Post athmhachnamh a dhéanamh ar an moladh seo agus cinneadh a dhéanamh ar bhonn leas an phobail agus Oifig an Phoist a choimead i mBéal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh.

Is mise

Dear Mr Connell

I am writing to express my disappointment and dissatisfaction at An Post’s opportunisticproposal to close the post office in Ballingeary upon the retirement of the postmaster.   It would be a major setback to replace it with a mere agency. The Post Office in Ballingeary is always very busy with locals coming and going, sending letters and parcels, collecting social welfare payments, paying bills and using the banking service.  It seems obvious to the entire community that it’s doing good business and that whatever reason for the proposal, the commercial health of the Post Office isn’t in question.

If the Post Office were to be closed, it would be a great blow to the community spirit and image at a time of economic recession nationwide.  Local companies use the Post Office and it’s a vital element in their day to day business.  The closure of the Post Office would adversely affect these companies and would be a hinderance to ongoing efforts to attract new business to the area.

Every Summer there’s huge influx of students to the area to attend the Irish Summer College, Coláiste na Mumhan, and they all use the Post Office as their bank.   An Post’s proposal would be a huge blow to these customers.

I believe that this is another blow by the Dublin based authorities against this area, a Gaeltacht, and against rural areas across the country.  If we don’t shout STOP!, it will be followed by further blows which will further erode life outside the urban areas.   I demand that An Post should revisit and reverse its proposal to close Ballingeary Post Office.  It’s in the public interest that Ballingeary should keep its post office. Sincerely

Sincerely
